Driftwood Donuts now at the gas station

Francine has moved her business from near to the pub to the gas station making it even more convenient for a quick pick up of her freshly made delicious delights. Our niece claims that these were the best thing about her trip, not just in Port Renfrew but the whole of Canada, surely there is no better recommendation than that! Check it out.

Winter Wonderland

February was a time of snow in Port Renfrew giving the place a magical winter wonderland effect.  The regular delights of Avatar Grove and the beaches took on a new character and made for delightful winter experiences.  It was great to walk in the snow and then come back to the cozy luxury of Eagle Reach to watch the weather roll by.

Storm watching and surfing in sunshine – the joys of January

Surfing at Pacheedaht Beach

January brought high waves to the Pacific coast so storm watching and surfing were the activities of choice.  Surfers flocked to the neighbouring Pacheedaht Beach and the waves brought fallen trees, driftwood and treasures form the deep.  The sun shone on everything!

January 18 saw high waves in Port Renfrew that over-topped the breakwater of the new marina.  One side was substantially destroyed but a week later the construction team had rebuilt the barrier ahead of the king tide due at the end of the month.  Amazing work!

The Eagles Are Back (and the Hummingbirds too)

P1020004.JPG

After a short absence we are happy to see the magnificent eagles back in their regular spot outside our balcony.  The hummingbirds never left and we are pleased to see them too.  We are still trying to get a picture of them on the feeder but so far they have been too fast for us to catch an image of them.

Reflections on our first Summer

P1010707

We have had a great Summer!  Since moving in and opening for bookings on Canada Day 2017 we have welcomed so many groups of guests to stay in our beautiful brand new home.  We’ve even been able to enjoy staying there a bit ourselves.  There is so much to see and do in and around Port Renfrew but it is also nice to just relax and enjoy the luxury of this special place.  It has been a treat getting to know our guests and neighbours a bit as well, we look forward to many more happy times at Eagle Reach in future, for ourselves and everyone else.

Port Renfrew enjoyed fabulous weather this Summer, it was hot and sunny every time we visited.  What more could we want?  It’s been so warm that we only tried the gas fireplace for the first time in October and now we are looking forward to cosy times indoors as well as sunny times outside.  The place just gets better all the time.

First Visitors

We are happy to have moved into our place.  The beautiful weather in Port Renfrew attracts many visitors including magnificent Edradour The Eagle who loves to watch from the tree next to our balcony.  From our balcony we have seen a whale and kayakers passing by.  We have also seen lots of seals (all called Bob), mature eagles (Glenmorangie Eagle and Talisker Eagle), hummingbirds, deer and many song birds.  It is the perfect vantage to watch the wildlife and the weather pass by.

Moved in 🙂

We are really excited to have celebrated Canada Day 150 by moving in to our new place.  We even managed to see the fireworks. We had the perfect view from our steamer chairs on our balcony.  We woke up to a beautiful morning in Port Renfrew and we were met by our first guest, a magnificent young eagle in the tree next to our balcony. With a lot of help from our new Port Renfrew friends we were set up in time to welcome our first Airbnb guests who will be staying for a week. Thanks to everyone.

Nearly There…

Ten months after we began our journey to home ownership in Port Renfrew we are ready to move in.  We have been amassing our furniture and fittings for many months and staging it across the Island.  Now we are ready to go, we booked our moving truck and coordinated pick-up of our deliveries.  We probably couldn’t have fit much more in our truck and it was quite an journey over the mountains.

Getting to know you through Airbnb 🙂

Airbnb_Horizontal_Lock_Up_PMS

Advertising our place through Airbnb was like opening a window to the world.  So many inquiries from such interesting people from far and wide.  It is so great to hear stories of what brings people to Port Renfrew – 70th Birthday celebration on the West Coast Trail, well-earned ‘Momcation’ with girlfriends, honeymoon for the newly weds, adventure travel with energetic kids to name a few – all good reasons to visit such a beautiful place.  Thank you for your interest in our place it has been a treat getting to know you a little bit.

The Tale of the Oversized Laundry Machines!

In our quest to be as sustainable as possible we wanted to use efficient laundry machines.  After much market research we found a great set that seemed to suit our purposes.  What made them even better was that Lowe’s in Nanaimo had them on sale so we snapped them up.  No problem, we had them delivered to Rob’s parents place on the Island to store until we were ready.  So far so good.  We sent off the specification sheets to the builder and got on with other things.  Then some weeks later it was realised that the machines were too deep for the allotted space that had just been dry walled in.  We needed to find new ones, smaller framed this time.  Luckily we found that Lowe’s had just stocked new machines, coincidentally the same ones as we have in our home in Vancouver (so we know they are very good) but there were only five sets available in the whole country!  We hopped on our motorcycle and went over to Nanaimo and back in one evening, just to buy the new machines and arrange return of the first set.  We were just within our return policy deadline so we rushed over to the island again to pick them up and return them to the store.  Lowe’s staff were very helpful throughout and their van made it all possible.  So happy to have the lovely machines installed.

The Start of Our Eagle Reach Story…

2016-08-13 15.33.49

Our story began in 2015 when Rob first visited Port Renfrew on a work trip and fell in love with the place.  So entranced by what he had found he sent Heather, in the UK, a postcard saying that we must visit again together.   By August 2016 we were married when we made that trip.  From the first time we saw the site of this property how could we resist?  Since then we have watched the construction.  As engineers with an interest in sustainability we have kept a close eye on the details of our property so we are confident that it offers a unique high quality experience.  We have chosen to upgrade many of the features of the property to improve the sustainability.  Some of the improvements are described on the Sustainability page.

We have also enjoyed furnishing our home with some stunning artworks by local artists.  See more about their work on our Artworks page.

We would like you to take time to relax in our home so we have installed high quality facilities throughout including an impressively large TV for your enjoyment.  We also have a collection of books for you to enjoy.  See some short reviews on the Library page.

We are very happy to be collaborating with local charity Ancient Forest Alliance and for every booking made with us we will make a donation towards the protection of old growth forests in this area and elsewhere.
